Moreover, he said, “Once modern warehouses are established and certification along with credit facilities are made available to farmers, they will be able to avoid ‘distress’ selling and will be in a better position to get a fair price for their produce in an efficient manner. PMEX will remain committed towards playing its due role in the development and success of the required eco system.”

The recently held Pakistan Investment Conference in Islamabad has produced more statements than investment. In fact, such affairs have seldom yielded more than a chance to adjust the optics.
The chairman of the Board of Investment, Mr. Miftah Ismael, made a list of investments that may come to Pakistan following the conference. However, the list is either unimpressive or it has entries that had been in the pipeline long before the conference. Still, the latter has been a useful forum to address foreign investors who have been shying away from Pakistan for a number of years now.
And some of the statements made by the government leadership deserve to be noted. Chief amongst these is Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s assurance to the assembled delegates that Pakistan possesses strong drivers of future economic growth, and has the commitment at the top to remain a “democratic and liberal” country.
The drivers of future growth, according to him, are the CPEC projects, as well as the government’s own initiatives in the energy sector, spanning LNG, solar, wind and coal. For his part, the finance minister used the opportunity to advance a political priority, telling the assembled delegates that an economic reform programme needs to be owned by all political parties and economic policy should not be politicised.
Meanwhile, the prime minister’s story has compelling aspects, because it is difficult to discount the importance of the large stakes that China is acquiring in Pakistan. With such a strong hand to back it up, Pakistan’s prospects of weathering any storm in the global economy are good. But investors will look at more than just the stakes being acquired by a foreign partner.
They may also want to know how this growing partnership is expected to change the landscape for investment in the country.Telling this gathering that economic policy should not be politicised may have been misplaced, because that is an internal political matter for Pakistan, and whereas most delegates would likely agree with the proposition, they would also concur that parliament is a better place to say this.
Events such as the investment conference serve as valuable forums to advance the country’s story, which is an essential ingredient for building investor confidence. It is equally important, however, for the story to ring true with the audience. That will be the big test for the assurances given by Mr Sharif. Follow-up actions can prove useful in the attempt.

Director General, SBI Muhammad Riazuddin said that under the vision and guidance of Dr. Asif A. Borhi, Chairman Sindh Board of Investment, SBI is organizing 5th edition of Livestock Dairy Fisheries Agriculture Exhibition 2015 in collaboration with Agriculture and Livestock Department Government of Sindh. This he said while holding a press briefing at SBI office on Tuesday.
He said that LDFA 2015 is more focused to target corporate sector, technological solutions, growers/farmers, investors, diplomatic missions, ambassadors etc. We assure our best dedicated efforts to make LDFA 2015 a memorable and commendable success.
We all are aware that that a large proportion of Pakistan’s and Sindh’s Economy is directly and indirectly linked with the agriculture sector. It provides 45% of employment to our labor force and contributes 21% in GDP of the country more recently as per the Economic Survey of Pakistan 2013-14. I want to reiterate the Government of Sindh’s resolve to promote and boost investment in agriculture and livestock sectors which are the back bone of Sindh’s agriculture based economy. Sindh produces a variety of field and horticultural crops. Major field crops are wheat, rice, sugarcane, and cotton; approximately 68% of the total cropped area is used for their production. The total output in Pakistan, Sindh produces 35% of the rice, 28% of sugarcane, 12% of wheat, and 20% of the cotton. Major horticulture crops are mangoes, bananas and chilies. Of the total output, Sindh produces 88% of chilies, 73% of bananas, and 34% of the mangoes. Sindh also has cultivable land under usage for fodder, pulses, condiments, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables. Rice is the leading kharif crop. Rice production offers an important source of employment and income in rural areas. In Sindh the IRRI type long grain heat tolerant tropical rice is grown. Rice is grown mostly on the west bank of the Indus. Extreme weather in the summer is perfectly suited to this type of rice. Cotton is the leading cash crop of Sindh. In fact, cotton cultivation in Sindh dates as far back as 5,000 years ago to the Indus Valley Civilization. It is also very important to note that the alternate crops like maize, pulses are also an important features of the agriculture economy of Sindh, and we have resolved to promote alternate crops. Pakistan livestock and dairy sector is the backbone of agrarian economy. Annual demand for milk is increasing by 10-20%, whereas the milk production is growing approximately 4% per annum only. Pakistan is 4th largest milk producing country in the World, however, the fact is that 40,000 tons of dry milk is being imported into Pakistan annually, equivalent to 320,000 tons of fresh liquid milk. Government of Sindh is committed to promote dairy sector not only for food security but also to improve value addition and value chain. Keeping in view the agriculture, livestock, dairy potential of Sindh, I would like to briefly elaborate the objectives of LDFA 2015; LDFA is a platform and an event to position Sindh as an economically viable province by identifying the areas/locations for investment in LDFA sectors. Taking into consideration the agriculture business promotion in Sindh the last four LDFAs cumulatively materialized business/commercial deals amounting to Rs. 1 billion and boosted up the agrarian economy of Sindh. This year, LDFA is expected to attract a lot more participants and visitors including diplomats, foreign and domestic businessmen and investors, banking and investment professionals, representatives of federal and provincial government ministries and departments. To realize the importance of LDFA 2015, let me mention here some keys facts about the companies, exhibitors participating in this year in the exhibition that are 24 exhibitors promoting exotic birds, 21 agriculture companies, 14 international companies and banks , 14 companies of Dairy and livestock , 9 companies in poultry and fisheries and 2 diplomatic missions. Besides, number of foreign investors, foreign companies, and international agriculture experts are expected to participate in LDFA 2015.
